Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of adding bamboo leaf ash on the compressive strength and durability of paving blocks. Bamboo leaf ash is used as a partial cement substitute because it has a high silica content and has the potential to be an environmentally friendly pozzolan material. The research method used is a laboratory experiment with variations in the addition of bamboo leaf ash of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of the weight of cement. Tests were carried out on compressive strength at the age of 7, 14, and 28 days, as well as durability which includes water absorption and abrasion resistance (wear). The results showed that the addition of bamboo leaf ash had an effect on increasing the mechanical properties and durability of paving blocks. The highest compressive strength value was obtained at a variation of 10% bamboo leaf ash with an average compressive strength of 37.00 MPa at the age of 28 days, higher than normal paving blocks of 29.50 MPa. In terms of durability, the 10% variation also produced the lowest water absorption of 4.39% and the lowest wear value of 17.23%, indicating the best resistance to water penetration and abrasion. Meanwhile, the addition of 15% bamboo leaf ash caused a decrease in performance due to the reduced amount of active cement in the mixture. Thus, the use of 10% bamboo leaf ash is the optimum level that can increase the compressive strength and durability of paving blocks while supporting the use of organic waste as a sustainable construction material.
