Analisis Implementasi Green Mining untuk Meminimalkan Dampak Lingkungan: Studi Kasus PT Berau Coal
Abstract
- Indonesia is one of the world’s largest coal producers and exporters. However, coal mining activities pose significant environmental risks such as land degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. This study aims to analyze the implementation of green mining practices by PT Berau Coal in minimizing environmental impacts from its mining operations. The research applies a qualitative single case study approach using secondary data from sustainability reports and scientific publications. The analysis focuses on several key initiatives, including the Berau Coal Green Mining System (BeGeMS), the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)–based technologies, and environmental evaluation through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The results show that green mining implementation at PT Berau Coal involves various strategies such as post-mining land reclamation and revegetation, emission reduction through B30 biodiesel utilization, energy efficiency programs, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable water and waste management. These initiatives contribute to reducing environmental impacts while supporting operational efficiency. The company’s commitment has also been recognized through the PROPER Gold and Green awards from the Indonesian government. Despite these achievements, the implementation of green mining still faces challenges, particularly high investment costs and evolving environmental regulations. Therefore, stronger collaboration among government, industry, and society is essential to support sustainable mining practices.
